Friend of the project (and current visiting scholar at UW–Madison) Silje Solheim Karlsen will be presenting in New York at Scandinavian House on Tuesday, November 4, from 7:00pm–8:00pm. The event, for those of you in the area, is free and open to the public.

In Norwegian/Sámi author Kathrine Nedrejord’s critically acclaimed novel The Sámi Problem (2024), we meet Marie, who has long hidden her Sámi identity. Through an intense journey in both history and geography, the novel explores what it means to be Sámi – and what it means to be a woman. Dr. Karlsen’s lecture will focus on Nedrejord’s novel, and particularly address existential questions surrounding the process of finding and acknowledging one’s identity.
