Andrea Herkert

Andrea Herkert is a rosemaler from Belleville, Wisconsin, whose ancestors immigrated from Telemark, Norway. Her earliest memories were watching her mother rosemal. Andrea graduated from UW-Madison in Art and Art History. She began Rosemaling in 2006, studying with master painters in the United States and Norway. A one-year Wisconsin Arts Board apprenticeship was pivotal. In 2013 she earned the prestigious Vesterheim Gold Medal, the highest honor awarded a rosemaler. In studio full time, Andrea teaches throughout the United States and is currently mentoring her fifth apprentice. She has written two Rosemaling design books. An American Scandinavian Foundation Fellowship supported an individual study of Rosemaling in Norway in June 2018.
